A Nation of Digital Communication

When I decided to declare my major as strategic communications at The Ohio State University, I never realized how much digital media would be a part of that.  When twitter first became popular, I had no interest in taking part in that space because I felt as though it overlapped with Facebook, an already extremely popular online medium.  I understood the value of expressing yourself online, but I didn’t understand how Twitter, Instagram , and even Pinterest, were going to make a name for themselves separate from Facebook.  Facebook had become so popular in such a short period of time, but in my mind there was no way that all those users were really going to be interested in quadrupling their online efforts.  While I still struggle with the concept of different media spaces, it seems the rest of the world has easily hopped on board.

With that said, businesses and organizations have taken notice fast and are quickly framing their marketing strategies to incorporate these new online sensations.  In addition to noticing my favorite brands and companies in the online media space, I also had to opportunity to work for a nonprofit, interacting via their website, Twitter handle, and Facebook page.  Since then, I have especially noticed other companies taking advantage of the younger generation’s online activity.  Through this blog, I will be addressing new media and how businesses use the space to generate profit.   Because the sensation is more of a new phenomenon, material and content will be innovative and exciting.
